Building a Food Secure Community

2021 Recap + 2022 Preview

As we gather to celebrate holiday festivities, we look forward with hope for the year ahead. At the Greater Cincinnati Regional Food Policy Council, we envision a future in which our region is a food secure community, where all residents have access to healthy food.

We have built a coalition of partners across the region to advance toward this vision. Through collaboration and advocacy we're connecting farms to institutions, such as schools and workplaces, and directly to consumers. We’re also increasing healthy food access and consumption in neighborhoods, by supporting community-driven enterprises and improved access points.

Here’s some of what we’ve accomplished together this past year:

  • launched the Feed Our Future campaign in four school districts, bringing more healthy, local food to school cafeterias and connecting kids, teachers and parents with the farmers who produce our food.

  • established a paid Community Advisory Board of neighborhood residents, giving them a seat at the table with our partner organizations to ensure that neighborhood access points and food education serve their actual needs.

  • allocated funding for farmers markets, vendors and nutrition incentive programs to collaborate on more streamlined local food access opportunities.

  • facilitated conversations among leading organizations to align behind a shared vision and overcome systemic challenges with innovative solutions.

With your help, in 2022 we will:

  • expand Feed Our Future to more school districts, conduct Local Menu Takeovers in cafeterias, and support educators in providing food and agriculture education.

  • help launch more neighborhood-led grocery stores in Cincinnati and expand nutrition, cooking, and waste reduction education at local food access points like pantries.

  • initiate community-supported agriculture (CSA) employee wellness programs with employers to make local, healthy food more easily accessible.

  • launch a dashboard to track key food system indicators for our region.

Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving and holiday season!
